Play It Live

I was watching a 1973 live video of Chicago playing "Saturday in the Park" at Caribou Ranch, and it completely blew my mind.

Back in the 70s, it was incredibly common for bands to go on TV and lip sync over studio tracks. I actually had to do this once as a "house band" for a TV show, dummy mics and all. It felt ridiculous, like Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters.

But in this video, Chicago is playing 100 percent live. Horns blazing, Terry Kath shredding, jazz seamlessly blending into rock. They weren't faking it. They were doing the actual, grueling work of musicianship in real time.

There is a massive lesson here for founders. Right now, it's easy to lip sync your startup. Throw an AI wrapper on an old idea, fake the demo, and pretend you're innovating. But the market always knows the difference between a backing track and the real thing.

Don't fake the music. Do the hard work. Play it live.
