I Failed Baking at Le Cordon Bleu

I went to Le Cordon Bleu. I love to cook and have been told I’m pretty good at it. 😊

But when we got to the baking section, I failed.

Because baking requires following rigid, step by step written instructions. As someone with ADHD, dyslexia, and a visual processing disorder, my brain simply does not process information that way.

I used to wonder, is it just me? I cannot bake a cake. I cannot build an IKEA table. I could not learn Mary Had a Little Lamb from a music teacher, even though I was playing Beethoven at five years old.

It was not until I went to the Berklee College of Music and utilized my accommodations that I finally realized I am not stupid. I just learn differently. I am wired for intuition and action, not for reading manuals.

This is exactly why every budgeting app on the market fails neurodivergent adults.

People constantly ask me, “Why don’t you just build a free app that gives people good financial advice?”

Because advice is completely useless when you have an executive function deficit.

Dr. Russell Barkley, one of the leading researchers in the world, has demonstrated through decades of research that ADHD is not a knowledge disorder. It is a performance and self regulation disorder. Neurodivergent people do not lack information about money. We know exactly what we are supposed to do. We just cannot reliably execute it when our nervous system is overwhelmed.

You cannot talk your way out of executive dysfunction. You cannot “reason” your way out of it.

Recently, I had five critical emails to send. I hit a wall. It was a classic executive function shutdown. But instead of fighting a losing battle against my own neurology, I recognized the freeze and immediately took action to bypass it.

I asked my husband to come sit next to me to body double. Just having him in the room changed the environment. The freeze broke. I sat down and cranked all five of them out in minutes.

I did not need an app telling me how to write an email. I needed external, structural support.

The neuroscience is clear: to help a neurodivergent brain, you have to externalize the system, shrink the gap between impulse and consequence, and provide actual support.

That is exactly what we are building at Pistachio Pay.

We do not give you a financial recipe and shame you when you fail to bake it. We do not nag you. We manage the architecture of your money for you, at the point of income, so you can finally feel safe.

We are not building another budgeting app. We are building the external nervous system for your finances.

Money should work with your brain.

Pistachio Pay is being built to reduce the mental load of money management for neurodivergent adults.
