Lucille Ball was not just a comedian. She was a boundary pushing visionary and a studio executive who refused to stay in the box the industry built for her.
My mom was a massive fan of hers. She admired Lucy not just for the laughs, but because Lucy was a fiercely independent thinker and a strong leader. I was raised by strong women to admire exactly that kind of out of the box leadership.
A few years ago, my husband and I actually stopped in her hometown in New York during a cross country road trip. We went to the Lucy and Desi museum, laughed at the infamous original statue standing next to the beautiful replacement, and soaked in the history of where this powerhouse actually started.
When the network told her audiences would not accept her real life Cuban husband, she stood her ground. When the rules said she could not show her pregnancy, she wrote it into the script. She pioneered the three camera setup we still use today and became the first woman to run a major television studio.
She did not wait for the industry to give her permission. She built her own production company and forced the system to adapt to her.
That is the exact energy I am channeling as a founder today. When the system is not built for you, you do not shrink to fit it. You build a new one. 🩷
