Divided Sky, Part 1: When Communication Works
I have listened to “Divided Sky” by Phish for over 20 years. Every single time, it pulls something out of me I can’t fully explain. Joy, tension, wonder, release. A whole range of emotions in under 15 minutes. 🥲🎶
It opens bright, almost joyful, like the start of a really good day. ☀️ Then it shifts into this intricate section where the notes literally play forward and then backward over shifting time signatures. It gets strange. It gets dense. You’re thinking, what is happening right now?
And then it opens up. Everything breathes. There’s this gorgeous tone on the lead guitar, this delicate line that just floats, and then it doubles in tempo and you feel it in your chest. It lifts. And it keeps lifting into one of the most transcendent solo passages I’ve ever heard in any genre. 🎸✨
Trey Anastasio composed this in college as what he called an orchestral work miniaturized to a rock band. Every section, every hit, every build is scored out. Even the famous mid-song pause where the band goes completely silent is architected. Trey has talked about watching waves of cheering ripple through the crowd during that silence. Structure first, expression inside that structure.
But here’s the thing that wrecks me.
Without Page on keys, Mike on bass, Fishman on drums, “Divided Sky” is just notes on paper. It becomes what it is because four people learned to speak the same musical language well enough to have a conversation that complex, that layered, that beautiful. The instruments are literally talking to each other. Responding. Listening. Making space.
That is communication. 🗣️🎵
And this same band that could communicate transcendently through music? They nearly destroyed themselves because they couldn’t communicate with words.
By the late 90s they were spending set breaks tearing apart each other’s playing. Page felt like an outsider for almost 20 years. He and Trey stopped speaking entirely. The criticism was killing the very thing that made them extraordinary.
Even the parts of “Divided Sky” that sound chaotic? Intentional. Every voice doing its job at an impossibly high level. Every voice finding its place. 🔥
When communication works, it’s the most beautiful thing in the world. When it doesn’t, it can break the people who need each other most.
More on that tomorrow. 👀
