Dancing in the Gas Station

There is a scene in the movie Reality Bites that lives rent free in my head.

Lelaina (Winona Ryder), Vickie (Janeane Garofalo), Sammy (Steve Zahn), and Troy (Ethan Hawke) are in a gas station convenience store.

The Knack’s “My Sharona” comes on.

Vickie asks the attendant if he can turn it up.

“You won’t be sorry,” she says.

And then they just lose it.

Dancing. Jumping. Singing.
Completely unmasked. Running on pure dopamine and joy.

Sammy jumps right in. No irony. No hesitation. Just delight.

Troy hangs back. Embarrassed.
Detached. Too “cool” to care.

And then the gas station attendant snaps at them. Annoyed. Policing the moment. Telling them to stop.

That scene is the perfect metaphor for the neurodivergent experience.

We are the ones dancing in the gas station. We have the energy, the creativity, the vision. We want to move.

Some people jump in with us.

They get it.

Some hover on the edges.

Unsure. Watching.

And the system tells us to quiet down.

The financial system is Troy plus the gas station attendant.

Detached judgment paired with authority.

Too cool to help. Too annoyed to adapt.

It tells us we are “too loud.”
It tells us to “grow up.”

It tells us that if we cannot sit still and fill out a spreadsheet perfectly, we are embarrassing.

The movie is called Reality Bites for a reason.

Because eventually, the song ends.

And for neurodivergent adults, reality bites HARD.

It bites in the form of late fees.

It bites in the form of the “ADHD tax”. $500-$2000 a month lost to executive dysfunction.

It bites in the form of shame.

I am building Pistachio Pay because I got tired of the system making me feel like I had to stop dancing just to survive.

We are automating the reality part.
The bills, the math, the boring stuff. So you do not have to mask your brain to stay solvent.

You should not have to choose between financial stability and your spark.

We handle the bite. You keep the rhythm. 🎸

Money should work with your brain.

Pistachio Pay is being built to reduce the mental load of money management for neurodivergent adults.
